Winner of the 2021 Best Green Holiday Home in Europe at the European Holiday Home Awards. Nestled in the most breathtakingly beautiful corner of the Scottish Borders is the log cabin, Reiver’s Hideaway, at Eildon Melrose Holiday Cottages & Log Cabins.

Reminiscent of an alpine chalet, the cabin was built by local craftsmen entirely from locally grown Douglas Fir Trees. The cabin’s shaggy grass roof is incredibly well insulated, beneficial to local biodiversity and helps the building blend in with the surrounding landscape. Around fifty sustainable trees were hand-felled and peeled before being cut in to shape using traditional log building techniques alongside modern power tools such as chainsaws and grinders. The interior carpentry was then completed by a talented local cabinet maker using timber from the same trees. Everything is built by hand. Everything is bespoke and unique.

Biophilic design is a concept of being more connected to nature and you will feel this in the log cabin. Being surrounded by natural materials and with incredible views and light flooding in through the large glass windows brings a definite sense of calmness and serenity here. Biophilic design has been shown to effect several health benefits, it reduces stress and promotes mental restoration.

Guests will marvel at the size of the huge tree trunks from which the cabin is built and the skill with which they have been scribed together. Many a guest has said the photos just don’t do it justice and it looks even better in the flesh, you have to see it to believe it!

The living room, with its vaulted ceiling and glass frontage gives panoramic views of the Eildon Hills to the front. Underfloor heating and a wood burning stove make this a cosy place at any time of the year. The large glass double doors open on to a large wooden decking area with wooden furniture and a Scandinavian style wood fired hot tub, perfect for stargazing – imagine sinking in to the hot water with a glass of fizz in hand and feel your stresses melting away…..

The two bedrooms in the cabin can both be made up with two single beds or they can be zipped together to make huge superking doubles – perfect for groups of friends, families or as a romantic escape for two (15% discount for 2 person occupancy).

At the foot of the Eildon Hills, the cabin occupies a serene and peaceful location yet is less than a mile away from Melrose town centre with its beautiful market square, superb array of independent shops and restaurants and its historic rugby club where rugby sevens was invented.
