Melrose is the most attractive (not biased at all!) town in the Scottish Borders and regularly wins Scotland in Bloom awards for the beautiful display of flowers throughout the summer months. In 2018 Melrose was also awarded the Sunday Times title of ‘Best Place to Live in Scotland’.
The town centre is very compact with only two main streets but there is a fantastic variety of small independent shops rarely seen on the high street these days. There are two butchers, two bakeries, a greengrocer, a delicatessen and a wine shop making it an ideal place to pick up those special ingredients for preparing a feast back at your holiday cottage.
If you would rather eat out then there are several excellent eateries in the town including Burts Hotel, winner of Scotland’s Dining Pub of the Year in 2018 and The Townhouse, run by the same family, is also very good. Monte Casino is great for Italian food and Marmions Brasserie is very popular as well. Provender is a new restaurant in the town and offers great seafood dishes with the menu inspired by the well known chef Pierre Koffmann.
For those wanting to eat in the comfort of their holiday cottage but looking for a night off cooking, the town is also well-off for takeaways. The best takeaway fish and chips are at the Station Hotel but there is also a takeaway that serves a large menu including kebabs, pizzas, and pakora as well as fish and the other usual chip shop foods. There is an Indian as well and the Italian restaurant has an excellent takeaway menu.
During the day there are several excellent cafes around the town so you will never need to be hungry or thirsty!
If you are looking to do some shopping in between meals there are several lovely clothes shops, a jewellers, an interior design shop, an antiques shop, a florist and a ladies hat shop who’s designs are regularly worn by the Queen!
There are some great places to visit in town too including, the woollen mill, the famous Melrose Abbey where Robert De Bruce’s heart is buried, Harmony Gardens and some beautiful walks along the river Tweed.
With several big events in the town including the Borders Book Festival, the Melrose 7’s, the Melrose Festival, the Scottish Bagpipe Championships and Hogmanay street party there is a lot going on in our wee town to make a perfect Scottish holiday destination.
The Eildon Melrose Holiday Cottages & Log Cabins are perfectly located next to the Melrose Golf Course on the edge of the town. We have six cottages and two luxury log cabins all with wonderful views over Melrose and the Tweed Valley and the town centre is just 2 minutes away in the car or 15 minutes walk.
Have a browse through our website for more information or to make a booking and we look forward to welcoming you to this wonderful part of Scotland.
